About This Project

La Trobe University, based in Melbourne, partnered with Cremorne Digital Hub to launch Tech Week Open House 2024, an event spotlighting Cremorne's emerging role as a technology and innovation district in Australia. The week brought together startups, established companies, and cultural venues across the area, inviting the public to explore the businesses and creative output concentrated in the district.

The organizing team needed a single digital entry point for the event. The site had to communicate the spirit of Cremorne's ecosystem, give attendees a clear way to navigate dozens of participating locations across the district, and deliver a polished experience optimized for mobile use during the event itself, all within a compressed timeline before the doors opened.

Menta delivered the full web design and development in Webflow within one month, organized around three priorities: a visually distinctive presentation aligned with La Trobe's institutional standing, an embedded interactive map for venue discovery, and an editorial structure that surfaced the participating organizations clearly. The site served as the event's central reference point for the public during Tech Week, with the interactive map carrying the bulk of the on-the-ground navigation.

The Challenge

CHALLENGE 1

Going Beyond Static Maps for Event Navigation

With dozens of participating venues spread across the Cremorne district, a static address list or a basic embedded map would not give attendees the level of context they needed to plan their visit. The event experience required a map that could carry venue details, photography, categorization, and direct links without forcing the user to leave the site.

CHALLENGE 2

Compressed Production Window

The site had to be delivered ready for the live event within roughly one month, covering design, development, content integration, and quality assurance. There was no room for an extended discovery phase or for redesign iterations once development began.

CHALLENGE 3

Polished Mobile Experience for On-Site Attendees

The site's primary use case was attendees on mobile devices navigating between venues during the event itself. Anything less than a polished mobile experience would have undermined the event's accessibility and the site's usefulness as a navigation tool in real time.

Our Approach

Solution 1

Atlist Integration for Custom Interactive Map

Atlist was selected over standard Google Maps embeds because of its flexibility in styling, layering venue metadata, and supporting customized markers and popovers. The map became a central interactive element of the site, allowing attendees to explore venues by type, location, and event association, fully integrated into the visual language of the rest of the page.

Solution 2

Component-Based Build with Relume

To compress the production timeline without compromising visual quality, the site was built using the Relume library as a starting point for layout components, customized to align with Cremorne's visual identity. This allowed development and design to advance in parallel, with structure decisions made early and customization layered over a validated foundation.

Solution 3

Mobile-Optimized Implementation in Webflow

Mobile breakpoints received explicit attention in both design and development. Touch interactions on the map were prioritized, page loads were kept light for on-the-go connections, and content hierarchy was tuned for small-screen scanning. The desktop experience was developed in parallel, sharing the same content and visual system.
